Lena Rivo uses color, value and composition to explore mood and emotion in her paintings. Like the Impressionists she is influenced by, she is absorbed with what she sees, feels and experiences and enjoys painting a variety of subjects including landscape, still life and figures, both in the studio and outdoor on location. She works directly from life to capture the qualities and nuances of natural light and color harmony.
”I am inspired by the natural world – by the interpretation of it’s beauty and moods with color and light. I try to simplify the complexities of a scene to create my impressions of nature and the man made world, working to interpret reality rather than to re-create it.”
Lena was born in Crimea, USSR in 1981 and immigrated to Portugal in 2005 where she now lives and paints. She studied fine art at both the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Lisbon and at the Centre of Art and Visual Communication in Lisbon. She then spent two years practicing figure drawing in life drawing classes before taking up painting full time in 2010.
